How to Get Your First Job in High School (What Actually Worked for Me)

If you've applied to a bunch of places and you heard nothing back, don't be surprised. I applied to five places on my first job hunt and was rejected by one and ghosted by the rest. After that I gave up and stopped trying.

Why Most High School Students Get Ghosted by Employers

When you apply online with no experience, you’re competing against dozens of applicants, older candidates with experience, and automated filters that don’t care you’re a student.

Your application goes into a pile. Nobody is incentivized to pull yours out. This is why ghosting is common. It’s not personal—it’s volume.

What I Did Wrong at First

Here’s the honest list of mistakes I made:

  • I only applied online
  • I didn’t follow up
  • I didn’t talk to a real person
  • My resume was generic
  • Result: silence.

What Finally Worked: The Referral Effect

I reapplied to the place that had rejected me, but this time with a referral from a friend. That one change took me from being rejected to interviewed. This taught me something important. Employers trust people more than forms.

    How to Get a Referral

I was lucky. My friend had a job at the place I had applied to. Not everyone has this type of luck, though.
    1. Ask friends where they work
If they like their job, ask if their manager is hiring.

    2. Ask older students
    Seniors have jobs. Use that.

    3. Ask teachers or coaches
They know local businesses that hire teens.

    4. Walk in and talk to employees
This works better than 20 online applications.

Hey guys I have recently updated the search bar so that it's able to filters through cityStates more efficiently. I also added Wendys, Albertsons, and Target and am currently stocking up the listings right now. Eventually I hope to have an area where local businesses can submit their own listings as well as a volunteer section.

Hey guys welcome to the first launch of mangohub. We know that it's hard for 16 yo and 17 yo highschoolers to find a job. So, we created this website for teenagers to help their job search. In this launch we have jobs from Chick-Fil-A, Chipotle, Panera, and Shake Shack listed on our website. Here are some other recommendations that I wasn't able to list on our website:

    In-n-Out Burger

    Yogurtland

The YMCA (link changes on location)
